Almost Done for Wizard World Philly

Still getting ready for Wizard World, and it’s still a fun ride. I have a few more prints to finish, and I hope to add some important ones I wanted to do. The above is Wash from Firefly. I posted before, but I wasn’t satisfied with how the skin looked, so I re made it and I’m glad with where it’s at now.

The above is a Barbara Gordon Batgirl in progress. I hope to finish this piece this week. I have a few commissions I’m also getting done with as well.

On top of the work, I’m missing movies! I’m missing Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby, and I might miss Star Trek! Help meee!

Unintentional Sexism in the Arts

I’ve been speaking with a buddy of mine about Free Comic Book Day and we’re sharing our experiences about the unintentional sexism with women in the arts. We both have experienced the credibility issue of “Did you really do this?” as we are drawing our own stuff, and “Are YOU the artist?” (sorta understandable if the artist is anonymous online). I don’t like to post lots of pictures of myself because of safety and such, but mostly I want to let the work speak for itself.

Also, on my end I’m sure that some women can feel my pain with how men think it’s ok to hit on women artists and flirt with them as though we are selling our looks and not our art. It’s disrespectful to refer to someone you aren’t dating as “baby”, “sweetie”, “honey” and all that slick sh*t. I’m not using my art to look for a date. I don’t come at anyone with pet names because “baby” isn’t their actual name. I don’t enjoy being seen as anything less than an artist because some jerk only views me as a POA. It’s not flattering to be asked to pose nude for another artist for whatever warped ideas they had for me. It’s perverted. Yes, if another woman finds it alright to pose as a live model then that’s her business. Don’t assume that all women in the arts will go that route.

Sure I’ll get the “Oh, don’t worry. Blah, blah, blah.” I’m not overreacting, I’m taking a stand. I have a right to be upset about it, but I’m making changes to help other be aware.

Free Comic Book Day 2013

Hey Everyone!

It’s me again and I’m updating my post to show the events from Free Comic Book Day 2013 @ Comics & More. The first Saturday of May is nationally known to comic lovers as ‘Free Comic Book Day’. May 4th was the best day of the Spring and it happened to fall on the same day as another holiday… Star Wars Day. Or as fans would call it “May the 4th Be With You.” So yesterday was THAT amazing. Cosplayers from all over get together to show off their costuming skills. The pictures in this post will how you how great everyone made their favorite characters. So much fun was had with cosplayers, meeting new people, and meeting up with familiar faces!

There was so much fun since most of my day was filled with comic book & superhero themed cupcakes! Once you see a pic of one below, you’ll want to make some for you and your friends! The store I went to was Comics & More in King of Prussia, PA. It’s one of my favorite comic shops for their elaborate selections of books and accessories. I and a few other artists showed some new art and was very happy to make some new fans.

This started from having the music of No Doubt stuck in my head over the weekend. Every time I listen to them I always go back to being a little girl watching the “Just A Girl” video for the first time. It was 1995 or 1996 and I was around 9 or 10, in my room making a strong connection with Gwen, Tony, Tom, and Adrian. Tragic Kingdom was the first CD I ever had. Waaaaay before iTunes and MP3′s. I fell in love with the new music I was exposing myself to along with discovering Natalie Merchant, Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Alanis Morrisette. The 90′s were great.

Fast forward to today and I still love them. They make me so happy and I feel like I went through some of the subject matter from my favorite songs. We all lived through a “Don’t Speak” moment. We still go through it time and time again. In the end we end up having to “Push and Shove” in order to have a “Hella Good” time in life.
